Course Description
NPLQ Generation 10 is the latest edition of the National Pool Lifeguard Qualification.
This course leads to an award which is recognised throughout the country as the minimum requirement for pool lifeguards. The course covers accident prevention, emergency action, life support, first aid procedures and rescue methods. There will be theory and pool work on both morning and afternoon sessions, covering the following:
- Knowledge and understanding of pool safety and supervision
- Life Support and First Aid
- Pool rescue skills and incident management
- Application of knowledge and skills to the working environment
New candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Students MUST be 16 years of age prior to assessment.
- Jump/dive into deep water
- Swim 50 metres in no more than 60 seconds
- Swim 100 metres continuously on front and back in deep water
- Tread water for 30 seconds
- Surface dive to the floor of the pool
- Climb out unaided without ladder/steps and where the pool design permits
- Complete a minimum of 36 contact hours of theory and practical training prior to assessment
- Perform sidestroke adequately
- Be able to meet the following basic fitness criteria:
An assessment to check each candidate’s skills will take place on the first morning, if at this stage the candidate is not competent in every area they will unfortunately be unable to continue with the course. Due to the nature of funding we will be unable to refund for the course, it is therefore the candidate’s responsibility to ensure they can meet all pre requisites prior to enrolling on the course. If you have any doubt prior to booking a space, please speak to the main office in the first instance.
Students with physical or learning difficulties may not be able to reach the required standard to gain this qualification and will be advised on an individual basis.
Please note that goggles or glasses (prescription or otherwise) cannot be worn for the final water assessment.
Our pool is 17 metres in length.
Continual assessment and final assessment by an independent assessor. This course leads to a full RLSS UK National Pool Lifeguard Qualification. Assessment takes place on the final day of the course.
The NPLQ is a great addition to any CV or higher education application, and from May 2024, NPLQ Gen 10 carries 8 UCAS Tariff points.
Costs
All costs below are subject to change at short notice.
In limited circumstances where a student fails a minor part of the assessment, there may be an opportunity to retake that section again. Where this occasion occurs, a further charge will be payable on the day of assessment.. Please contact Centre for details.
Because of the restricted numbers of spaces on this course and the high demand for this qualification, we will be unable to give refunds\transfers for either the course fee or the additional costs for course materials and assessment, unless we receive 14 days written notification or the production of a medical note for the enrolled person. In addition, transfers to later courses will only be agreed following production of a doctor’s note for the enrolled student. Accredited Prior Learning
Applicants for this course should be aware that shorter courses may be available for those holding recognised qualifications relevant to the course. Exemptions apply to holders of the following current awards and qualifications
RLSS UK National Beach Lifeguard Qualification (12 hours)
RLSS UK Bronze Medallion or higher award (12 hours)
HSE Approved First Aid at Work Certificate or Occupational First Aid Certificate (9 hours)
RLSS UK Life Support 3 Award (3 hours)
STA NARS (PL) Qualification (12 hours)
A maximum of 12 hours accreditation for prior learning may be claimed
Unfortunately this centre cannot offer reduced training times as it may disrupt other learners. Applicants with prior learning are welcome on the course and are advised to bring original evidence of their qualification on the first day as exemption from part of the final assessment may be possible.

To prepare learners to gain a full Royal Life Saving Society UK Level 3 National Pool Lifeguard qualification. (Gen 10)

What Do I Need To Bring With Me?
Swim wear, tee-shirt, shorts/skirt (to be worn over swimwear in the pool area) towels, whistle, notepad and pen, sandwiches and a drink. There are no canteen facilities available on site during the week.
Please note there are two pool sessions most days. You may wish to bring extra swimwear. Please go to the main reception when you first arrive. It is essential that students attend all days.
