Upholstery and Soft Furnishings (Not currently running – Register an interest for future courses)

Course Description

Upholstery  –   You will learn how to recover small items of furniture i.e. Drop in seats, ottomans, stools, stuff-over chairs and headboards. You may use traditional or modern methods of upholstery. You will learn how to strip your item of furniture and recover to a high standard. If you are new to upholstery then I suggest that you start with a stool or drop in seat.

Tools and Equipment  –  Tack Hammer, Mallet, Scissors, Basic sewing equipment i.e. pins, needles, sewing thread, tape measure, fabric marker pen or tailors chalk;   Notebook and pencil;  The Tutor has a selection of tools that you may use in the class.

Soft Furnishing  –  You may choose from a pair of curtains lined, cushions, lampshades, blinds, Quilt Covers and pillowcases. I am able to teach you to personalise your cushions using decorative techniques such as piping, pleats, patchwork, applique, transfer dying, embroidery and machine embroidery. I will teach you how to use your sewing machine.

Course Aim

Upholstery: To upholster a dining room chair, headboards, seats, stool, cane chairs. Using either modern or traditional upholstery.

Soft Furnishings: To personalise a cushion using applique or personalise Roman Blinds/curtains.

Entry Requirements

- Must have the ability to use a staple gun or a hammer.
- The course is suitable for someone who has never done upholstery before or who have an interest in making soft furnishings for their home decor.

What Do I Need To Bring With Me?

Basic sewing equipment, Matching sewing thread, Tape measure, A tack hammer, mallet and staple gun. The tutor has a selected use of tools for the first class Also, fabric re-covering, calico, Notepad and pen,.The tutor has the base fabrics that the students can buy. Please bring the chair or stool or small item of furniture to the first class to discuss the project with the tutor
